It seems like every week we hear of someone being rescued from the San Gabriel Mountains. Winter adds beauty and new challenges, sometimes with tragic results, as people flock to our mountains. Susan McCreary and other members of the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team will relate dramatic stories of rescue and survival in the San Gabriel Mountains in a program hosted by the Sierra Club’s Forest Committee.

Team members including Jon Pedder and John Dailey will tell of their work and offer suggestions about how to safely hike snowy trails and enjoy winter recreation while avoiding the unique dangers the season brings such as hypothermia. They will also offer tips on basic equipment you should always have with you and on outdoor apps for your smart phone that could save your life. Sierra Madre Search and Rescue is a world-renowned all-volunteer, self-funded rescue team serving our foothill communities since 1951.  REI equipment expert Saveria Tilden will offer tips on winter equipment for the public, from parkas to snowshoes that can make you and your family safer in winter recreation.

You will also hear news of Forest Committee hikes and activities and an update on the  San Gabriel Mountains National Monument.

A social reception at 7 p.m. precedes the program, which is free and open to the public.  For more information contact Don Bremner (donbremner@earthlink.net) or John Monsen (wildernessjfm@aol.com).
